Extreme Bikers Stress Importance of Helmets

Professional BMX bikers soared off ramps set in Kelloggsville Middle School, performing backflips, 360-degree spins and advanced tricks called tail whips and no-footed can cans.

Through a partnership with Spectrum Health and Grand Haven-based action sports organization AGA Nation, bikers showed off their high-flying feats, even jumping over a row of four students and two adults lying on the floor. Team manager Cory Yarbrough flipped over teacher Zach Duncan, who was seated in a chair on top the bike ramp.

Despite the extreme nature of BMX biking, the focus of the event was on safety, part of the “Lids on Kids” series, presented by Spectrum Health, to promote helmet use and concussion prevention. Bikers said they always wear protective gear, and wouldn’t ride without it.
