Retired National Basketball Association player Mateen Cleaves is offering a three-day camp for students to improve their shooting form and teach them life skills.
Cleaves’ 1 Goal, 1 Passion Summer Basketball Camp will be held July 28-30 at Godwin Heights High School, 50 35th St. SW for 8 to 12-year-olds from 9 a.m. to noon and teens, ages 13 to 17, from 1-4 p.m.
Students from all districts welcomed
Young people do not have to be students in the Godwin Heights district to participate. Entry fee is $1 and online registration can be completed here.
While basketball is the camp’s draw, the overall intent goes beyond improving a player’s shot pocket, said Cleaves, now a sports analyst for Fox Sports Detroit, Sirius XM and CBS sports.
“When we started these camps two years ago, I wanted to make sure that we were taking the opportunity to teach young people lessons that would help them grow as individuals and community members, not just as basketball players,” Cleaves said.
Cleaves’ NBA career started in 2000 when he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons, followed by the Sacramento Kings. He then signed as a free agent with the Boston Celtics and was waived before the 2003-04 regular season began. He later played with the Cleveland Cavalier and then the Seattle SuperSonics.
