Lessons Taught at the Lakeshore

Oriole Park Elementary fourth-grader Emanuel Alcantera made his way over to the sand dune at Tunnel Park in Holland and got his first-ever glimpse of Lake Michigan.

“It looks beautiful. It looks fun!” Emanuel said. “I like the shore, the waves. The water’s so beautiful, and it looks like it never ends.”

A day of learning and play at the lakeside park provided a new experience for some students.

Fourth-grade teacher Sheri Adams said her class has studied how sand dunes are formed, so it was exciting for many students to see one.

“So many of them have never seen Lake Michigan before,” she said. Fourth-grade student Michael Lynch tries to figure out the pattern in a game requiring students to step from circle to circle in the right order

The 22-acre park has a tunnel through the dune leading to the lakeshore.

Third- and fourth-grade classes recently spent a fall day at the park participating in educational games focused on team-building, playing volleyball and, of course, climbing up and down the dunes.
