Students’ ‘Giving Hearts’ Help Needy Families

Some families at Beach Elementary School have needs of their own, but that didn’t stop them from helping out others for Thanksgiving. Students and their parents raised $1,900 in a week-long “Coins for Turkeys” fund drive to support Thanksgiving meals for those in need. The money was donated to North Kent Community Services, a nonprofit helping agency serving Cedar Springs and other parts of northern Kent County.

The top two fundraising classrooms presented symbolic checks to Claire Guisfredi, executive director of NKCS. Each class member also will have a chance to put a pie in the face of Principal Ken See.

The project was launched by the Beach building culture committee to enhance students’ understanding of civic duty, and underscore the school contract committing students and staff to take care of themselves, others and the school, See said.

Rebekah Nagy’s second-grade class was one of the top two fundraising classrooms“The students really jumped on this and it was wonderful to see their giving hearts,” See said. “It was a great project and we are proud of the results.”
