Shades of Life

By Haily Raupp

Editor’s note: Students in Grace Bollman’s English class at Kenowa Hills High School were assigned to write a poem reflecting on the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. This one was written by 10th-grader Haily Raupp.

A morning following a gloom soaked night
I watched the sunrise take full flight
and as that leading orb appeared
all my sorrow disappeared
I realized then what I had not before;
That life is like a sunrise
Life is that rosy first light
hope of a new day from the previous night
“Everything is impermanent…” Morrie had said
and it’s true, I understood, as I peered at the red
The warm glow smiled, brought me into a hug
I fit in nicely like the tip of a plug
Life is truly that casual emerge,
the scarlet, the energy, the will to diverge
Life is a rich lavender streak
a sign of stability, devotion, reaching one’s peak
Life is a sunrise, Earth’s most lavish gold
the thing most cherishable, something to hold
So if your life was painted amongst earth’s canvas,
what colors would your life emit dancing with the planets?
