Student’s Design Graces Cover of District RAMS Reportby Charles Honey
Senior Hunter Denman didn’t know a lot about the RAMS reports, the Rockford Action Model for Success the district produces every three years to guide its educational goals. But he knew enough to design a cover for it.
Hunter’s illustration using black-and-orange building blocks will grace the latest report, RAMS X, when it is published later this month. His design idea was chosen from about a dozen student submissions by Superintendent Michael Shibler and his cabinet of administrators.
“Every year builds on top of each other,” Hunter says of his building-block idea. “Rams X is going to have new and improved things from RAMS IX. Not only does the school build, but the kids build as well.”
Created with input from staff, students and parents, the report has been produced since Shibler became superintendent in 1989. It outlines short- and long-term goals in areas from curriculum and building needs to finances and special services for mental health and remedial academics.
Hunter created the cover using Photoshop in Melissa Burkholder’s graphic design class, and made revisions suggested by administrators.
“Hunter did a great job meeting all of the revisions that came back from Administration to get the design perfect,” Burkholder said. “I am proud of the work he did and the patience he exhibited during the finalization process.”
Hunter is soft-spoken about his winning design for the districtwide plan.
“It’s cool, but I didn’t realize how big it is,” he said.
