Multilingual fair connects students to summer opportunities

Godwin Heights — Looking to help connect students to summer opportunities, Godwin Heights High Schools recently hosted a Multilingual Night Summer Opportunity Fair.

“We get questions from families about what is available during the summer,” said Julia Knutson, who with Jamie Lomonaco organized the event. Both Knuston and Lomonaco are multilingual learner coordinators at the high school.

“We wanted to show families what is out there for the upcoming summer, jobs, volunteer opportunities and things for a resume.”

About 15 different organizations attended the first-time event highlighting work, volunteer and fun activities available in the summer. There was also an informational table with additional resources and translators were available to help connect families to presenters.

“I didn’t know about (the YMCA’s) Camp Manitou-Lin before,” said parent Latonia Jones, who attended the event with her children. “I have learned a lot and it was nice to know about some of the resources that are available.”

Junior Shani Valdez walked from table to table with friends, stopping to talk to YMCA representatives, from whom she learned about programs and job opportunities, and the Lake Michigan Credit Union table, where they played a budgeting game.

“I think this is a very good opportunity,” Shani said. “There are a lot of opportunities for internships and jobs and it’s a good start to see what is available to you.”
