Roger Bearup to retire after 37 years in education

‘A leader knows when it’s time’

Grandville — After 11 years leading Grandville Public Schools, Superintendent Roger Bearup has announced his plan to retire at the end of the current school year. He informed the Board of Education of his decision at its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

His last day in the district will be June 30.

“Usually, a leader knows when it is time (to retire),” Bearup told SNN, noting that “nothing negative, that is for sure” impacted the decision and that it has been “an honor and privilege to serve the great people of Grandville.”

“I have been so blessed to be a part of this great community. … I leave knowing Grandville Public Schools has the solid foundation needed to be a destination place for many years to come.”

Bearup’s career has spanned 37 years in West Michigan public education, first as a teacher and principal in Kent City, and later as an assistant superintendent in Lowell. He joined GPS in July 2015.

In a letter sent to staff and the board, dated Jan. 20, he thanked them and the Grandville community for their support, for helping to create meaningful educational experiences and for “shaping my journey.”

“Our partnership has been a joy, and I will forever cherish the friendships, achievements, and the remarkable students we’ve had the privilege to serve together,” he wrote. “A leader is only as strong as the people they work with, and I couldn’t have asked for better mentors, colleagues and supporters.”

Bearup said he’s “not entirely sure” what comes next.

“I plan to take some time to enjoy things I haven’t been able to do, spend quality time with loved ones and visit some places I’ve long wanted to see,” he said. “Afterward, I hope to engage in something new that will continue to serve others and leave a positive impact on their lives.”

The district said the board will begin the superintendent search process in the coming months and will share more regarding a timeline as those details are finalized.
