East Grand Rapids — Check out what students are working on in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics during the district’s first-ever Community STEAM Night, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 at East Grand Rapids High School, 2211 Lake Drive SE.
The event will resemble a science fair, but with more of an emphasis on showcasing than on competition, said EGRHS chemistry teacher Tom Fox, who is helping plan and organize the evening.
Student exhibits will be featured throughout the high school, including the middle-school and high-school robotics and Science Olympiad teams, the high school’s Gone Boarding class. Student-created drones and art projects will also be featured.
Area scientists, STEAM professionals and community partners will also bring booths, demonstrations and displays. Organizations scheduled to attend include John Ball Zoo, Array of Engineers, Atomic Object, Gordon Food Services and BAMF Health.
The goal of the night will be “to showcase the amazing talents of our 6-12 students,” Fox said, while also drumming up interest in STEAM among younger students who will find themselves in middle school and high school in the coming years.
“We want to get kids of all ages excited about STEAM, and we want community organizations to be part of our school district and interact with our students in a positive way.”
To those who are on the fence about whether to attend, “Take a risk,” Fox said. “Come out, see what’s going on, interact with our students and enjoy the evening as a family.”
Goodie bags will be available for the first 100 elementary students who attend. RSVP for the event by following the QR code here.
