Her dream: to sing on Broadway

Your Dream is Our Dream: Alyssa Sherman

Byron Center — Senior Alyssa Sherman said her earliest memory of performing was singing show tunes while jumping on the trampoline in her backyard.

In sixth grade, she upgraded her trampoline to a stage and auditioned for stageGR’s production of “Honk.” Alyssa was cast as Grace the duck, and said she attributes this breakout role for discovering her passion for theater. Several stageGR shows later, she’ll perform as Regina George in “Mean Girls” this weekend.

“I’ve always loved singing and grew up wanting to be a pop star,” she said.

Looking to her future, after graduating from Byron Center High School this spring, Alyssa plans to make her dreams a reality.

What is your dream? “My biggest dream is to perform on Broadway, travel around the world performing and, eventually, run my own theater.”

How do you plan to pursue your dream? “After I graduate, I am planning on going to Ohio University to pursue a bachelor of fine arts degree in musical theater. After researching and auditioning for programs across the country, this one was the best fit for me. I’m very excited about the community I’m entering and being around people who are also passionate about the things I’m passionate about every day.”

How have teachers and mentors helped you work toward achieving your dream? “Two of my biggest influences have been Ella and Daniel Morgan, the executive and artistic directors of stageGR. Those two have helped me realize that I am enough. It’s also been a good whirlwind of experiencing high school shows (at Van Singel Fine Arts Center) and getting to experience the theater community here in Byron Center.”
