Byron Center — At West Middle School’s annual Lewis and Clark Day, eighth-grade explorers simulated the 1803 Corps of Discovery Expedition, where Capt. Meriwether Lewis and 2nd Lt. William Clark traveled west across the newly obtained Louisiana Purchase to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
Students navigated 18-20 stations in the field behind the school, where they learned skills used on the expedition, including fire building, bartering, water purification, Native American sign language and shelter-building.
After each stop on their travels, students recorded their findings and what they learned in their expedition journals, just like Lewis and Clark.
SNN’s videographer visited West Middle School to brave the wilderness on foot alongside eighth-graders on the open plains of West Middle School.
