Come fall of 2017, high school students will enjoy a completely renovated school, and construction has officially begun.
The district recently held a ground-breaking ceremony, complete with golden shovels and attended by about 150 administrators, staff members, students, parents, alumni and community members.
“It’s a great day,” said Board President Tim Pomorski. “This is something the building has needed for many years. It’s going to be a quality education place for many years.”
The $27 million renovation, funded by the $33.9 million bond issue passed in February, will go toward demolition of a 1930s wing, and a large addition. A courtyard area will be replaced by eight new classrooms. The parking lot will be reconfigured and the entrance of the school will shift from Jean Street to Division Avenue.
A new competition-sized gymnasium will host varsity games, currently held at Kelloggsville Middle School, and allow for more practice space; the auditorium will receive theater-style seating for 480; and a media center will serve as a hub for learning and community center.
Use of facilities will be open to the public. A new entrance will also be built at the football stadium.
Bond projects already completed include a new maintenance facility at 230 52nd St., and a secured entrance at Kelloggsville Middle School.
