West Michigan neighbors recognized for innovative student, parent programs

Multiple districts – Three districts in lower West Michigan were recently recognized by SET SEG for innovative programs in their schools. Jenison Public Schools, Hesperia Community Schools and Lakeview Community Schools have been named as winners in The Education Excellence Awards

The annual awards highlight 10 new ideas in teaching, student engagement, and programs for students in areas like student achievement and community involvement. The award program is organized and hosted by the SET SEG Foundation, in partnership with the Michigan Association of School Boards.

Awards are typically given at a school board meeting or district assembly. They come with $2,500 grants to help implement the new initiative, along with a trophy and a road sign designating the district as an Education Excellence Award winner. Submissions are accepted annually in December.

West Michigan’s winning ideas:

  • Jenison’s Parent Liaison Program, which “connects families with community resources and supports parent-teacher collaboration, improving student performance by providing consistency in academic and behavioral practices from school to home”
  • Hesperia’s Special Education Career Development “assists students in developing employment skills they will need after graduation. Students learn skills like filling out applications, interviewing, budgeting, and more, to help them navigate the transition into independent adults”
  • Lakeview’s Science of the Trades “gives students an opportunity to explore science concepts through various occupations, such as electrical work and fire investigation. Students interact with experts in the field who have donated their time to support the learning in the classroom”

“It’s an honor for us to recognize these schools and their educators, and to help support and advance their special programs’ efforts,” said Molly Mellema, SET SEG Foundation executive director, in a press release. “Dedicated, passionate teachers and staff in public schools are what help provide opportunities to learn, grow and build brighter, stronger futures for students in our communities and state.”
