Ayden is a natural helper, said his teacher, Meg Richards.

East Grand Rapids — When Ayden Steffens saw a first-grader on the playground who needed help, he immediately knew what to do.

“I found the playground helpers and asked if I could take him to the office because I knew they would have bandages and supplies,” said the Breton Downs fourth-grader.

Ayden is a natural helper, said his teacher, Meg Richards.

“He is a good friend to the other students,” Richards said. “He is always positive and a very engaged learner.”

Ayden said he just likes to help.

“I always have done it,” he said. “I started figuring out a while ago that helping out would be a good thing.”

Next year, Ayden will be a fifth-grader at Breton Downs, where he knows the expectation is leading by example.

“As a leader, I hope I inspire others,” Ayden said. “If they follow me and like what I am doing, then maybe they will start to be leaders too.”

For his science project, Ayden Steffens worked with magnetics
