From humble beginnings to ArtPrize winner, artist shares his story

Artist Abdoulaye Conde visits Pine Ridge elementary to share his culture with students

Forest Hills — Drawing in the dirt with his finger is how artist and 2023 ArtPrize winner Abdoulaye Conde said he started his art career.

The artist recently visited Forest Hills elementary schools to share his life story and the culture from his home country of Guinea, West Africa.

He played the kora, a stringed instrument used in West Africa, and had students draw a piece of art inspired from his winning ArtPrize mural “Raining Wisdom,” which can be found at 45 Ottawa NW in Grand Rapids. Our videographer was there to capture all the action.
