Keep your home safe from fire dangers this holiday season

Education Everywhere — The winter holidays are a time of family gatherings and good cheer, which often include candles, Christmas trees, decorations, space heaters, fireplaces and other sources of warmth. Our Education Everywhere partner, E.S.C.A.P.E. Fire & Safety, shares some simple steps to keep your holiday cheerful, safe and happy:

Candles

Most fires caused by candles occur because they are placed too close to items that can catch fire. Candles should be kept at least one foot away from anything flammable, and should always be blown out before leaving a room or going to bed. Use sturdy candle holders that will not tip over and place them on uncluttered surfaces. Avoid using candles in bedrooms or in other areas where people may fall asleep. Children and pets should never be left alone in a room with a burning candle. Consider using flameless candles, which are a safer alternative.

Christmas Trees

If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure it is being watered regularly and needles aren’t falling off. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat sources, like fireplaces, space heaters, radiators or heat vents. Only use lights that are labeled by an independent testing laboratory and are designated for indoor use. Make sure all the light strands are not worn or have loose bulbs. Also, make sure that the tree is not blocking an exit.

Space Heaters, Wood Stoves and Fireplaces

Keep all flammable materials at least three feet away from the heat sources and turn off all space heaters when you leave the room or go to bed. Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet instead of using extension cords or power strips.
