Kent ISD — A Forest Hills Central student dominated the Kent County Cup esports tournament this past weekend.

Senior Henry Wierenga competed against 51 other esports athletes from area high schools in the third Kent County Cup Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, which took place at the Kent Career Tech Center.

Caledonia senior Ayden Hosington took second, West Michigan Aviation Academy senior David Standish placed third and Northview senior John Richard finished fourth. Those winners received a trophy, keyboard, headset, controller and medals. The championship belt went to Henry.

Also at the event was a networking bingo challenge, where students were encouraged to connect with business and industry partners at the event. This year’s bingo winner was Mars Brown of Wyoming High School, who received a gaming chair.

Students also had the opportunity to explore shoutcasting, delivering live play-by-play commentary for the tournament livestream. This year’s shoutcasting winner was Caleb Starnes of East Kentwood High School, a walk-in competitor.

The Kent County Cup was developed by Kent ISD’s Workforce Development Department in partnership with Kent ISD STEM consultant Du Bui, with guidance from esports consultant Will Wolf.
