Loving learning in the great outdoors: ‘It brings so much joy to me’

Field School explores nature as a living textbook

Northview — Caterpillars chomping, bees buzzing, hawks soaring and deer charging: Such are the creatures third- and fourth-graders encounter in Field School at East Oakview Elementary. They’re among 120 first- through sixth-grade students enrolled in the district’s outdoor education program, which immerses them in nature’s wonders in tandem with their classroom lessons. We talk with four of them on a fall afternoon about why they love exploring the field behind their school and what they learned about watersheds in preparation for a trip to Benzie County.
