Counselor who overcame challenges clicks with middle-schoolers

Editor’s note: A new podcast from School News Network, “Study Hall” highlights the students, teachers and others making education magic happen every day in classrooms across Kent County and beyond. We dive into the challenges and changes of K-12 education, opening a window into our public schools to provide a glimpse of the little miracles of learning that happen there. Featuring a rotating cast of guests from all 20 school districts in Kent Intermediate School District, “Study Hall” will introduce you to amazing students, dynamite teachers and brainy education experts.

All Districts — “Study Hall” welcomes Jordan Poisson, a Lee High School graduate who is now a school counselor at Westwood Middle School in Grand Rapids Public Schools. School News Network has followed Poisson’s story over the past 10 years as she went from a student overcoming the obstacles of living in poverty, to a college student pursuing several degrees, to now working as a school counselor herself. In this episode, Poisson talks about the highlights and challenges of working with middle school students, how she relates to them in a unique way and how she helps them learn about careers, college and other options for their future
