Book club for kids helps raise awareness of social justice issues

Education Everywhere — Children can become aware of social issues at a young age, and the Grand Rapids Public Library is helping foster that with a book club that will meet through the end of 2024.

The “Social Justice Begins with ME” book club is for children ages 4 to 11. Children ages 4 to 8 will listen to a book read by a volunteer and discuss the topics in small groups. Those ages 9 to 11 will read a book in advance and discuss it together in a small group.

The groups will meet at the main branch of the library, 111 Library St. NE, from 10:30 a.m. until noon on the following Saturdays:

  • Sept. 21
  • Oct. 19
  • Nov. 9
  • Dec. 7

Topics will include racial justice, disability justice, environmental justice and gender equity.

To register, visit the library’s book club page.
