Educators: Learn how to teach about ‘finfluencers’, sports betting

Grand Rapids — High school teachers looking for a way to earn some professional development credits in June can also take in a West Michigan Whitecaps game, courtesy of Lake Michigan Credit Union.

The West Michigan Personal Finance Summer Conference on Thursday, June 18, will present ready-to-use lessons that blend economics with real-world applications for students, including the economics of sports betting and how to evaluate “finfluencers.” Attendees will also get tips on teaching investing and home ownership, and will be able to collaborate with others on lesson development.

The conference will be held at the LMCU Corporate Office in Grand Rapids. The conference is free, but registration is required. Participants will earn five SCECH hours, and all attendees will also receive a $75 stipend and a ticket to the West Michigan Whitecaps baseball game that evening. The first 20 teachers to register will receive tickets to the LMCU suite at the ballpark for that game.

Besides LMCU, the conference is presented by the Michigan Council on Economic Education.
