Carly Glanzman: Michigan Elementary PE Teacher of the Year

by Paul R. Kopenkoskey

She's got 642 subscribers to her YouTube channel, and content she has shared has been viewed more than half a million times. Her blog, which she has been writing since 2005, shares with her students, their parents and others what she does in class, often including videos. And that's just when she's not teaching physical education.

Carly Glanzman takes fitness very seriously.

The Kenowa Hills Central Elementary physical education teacher is known as an exemplary teacher and a willing mentor to elementary physical education specialists. That has earned her a 2015 SHAPE Michigan Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award from the Society of Health and Physical Educators–Michigan.

“My dream came true 11 years ago when I was hired to teach physical education at Kenowa Hills Public schools,” Glanzman said.

This is the second year in a row a KHPS teacher has been awarded the honor. Last year, teacher Todd Johnston was named the Michigan High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year.

Seeing Beyond PE’s Basics

“Both Mr. Johnston and Mrs. Glanzman are great examples of our teachers who see beyond the basics of physical fitness, and make physical education an impactful part of our students’ educational experience,” said KHPS Superintendent Gerald Hopkins.

Glanzman extends her expertise to others in her field. Through her blog, she is a mentor to other elementary physical education specialists, and has led professional development opportunities for teachers as a host and speaker.

A Grand Valley State University alum, Glanzman is repeatedly recognized by the university as a cooperating teacher for student teachers and interns, and as a guest speaker in undergraduate classes.

The award will be presented on Nov. 6 in Lansing.
