Champion spellers compete Tuesday at The Bee

Winners from school spelling bees across West Michigan will gather Tuesday, March 27 at 6:30 pm in the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum for The Greater Grand Rapids Spelling Bee. The winner of this, the 41st Bee, will go on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

With eight former middle school contestants returning Tuesday, organizer MaryNell Baldwin from Kent ISD said the competition will be especially strong. Between 20-30 students typically participate in the Grand Rapids event.

In addition to the trip and national competition, the winner will receive gifts including cash from Old National Bank, several subscriptions and a warm welcome at Civic Theatre’s Opening Night of Akeelah & The Bee. Civic Theatre is providing tickets for all the contestants and the top finishers will be introduced onstage and be featured at a reception after the show.
