Comstock Park — It’s tournament time every spring at Pine Island Elementary, when fourth- and fifth-graders spend a couple weeks creating their own shuffleboards in STEM class.
STEM teacher Olivia Bender said the focus of the lesson is to give students an opportunity to practice taking measurements. They use rulers to measure the center of their boards and scoring areas, and break out their math skills to put everything together.
Once the boards are completed, the competition begins. For most of April, teams of two compete with classmates, then others in their grade level, with the winners facing off to claim the championship trophy and bragging rights.
Winners this year were fifth-graders Riley George and Jesus Contreras, who came from behind to beat the fourth-grade team of Auden Keur and Niko Ramirez by only a couple points.
