Musical theater camp sets the stage for show-stopping fun

More than 180 students in grades 3-8 spent a week singing, dancing and acting their hearts out

Forest Hills — The stage was set, the music was playing, and more than 180 young performers were ready to shine this summer at the district’s second annual Showstoppers Musical Theatre Camp.

In July, students in grades 3-8 spent a week singing, dancing and acting their hearts out while bringing songs from such musicals as “The Lion King,” “Matilda” and “Hairspray” to life.

“Our goal is to build the theater programs here in Forest Hills Public Schools so kids get the experience and have a ton of fun,” said Dave Howard, director of the district’s summer theater programs, which also include Summerstock for high school students and Summerstock Jr. for middle school students.

Howard said Showstoppers is designed to be an introduction to theater. Students participated in intensive dancing, singing and acting classes in preparation for a performance on the final day for family and friends.

Our videographer stopped by to speak with the young performers and see some of their singing and dancing firsthand; check out all the action in the video above.
