New principal serving MySchool@Kent

Kent ISD — Karl Nelson is the new principal of MySchool@Kent.

Nelson had been serving as interim principal for the online program serving middle and high school students since fall.

“I have always valued the opportunity to serve students and staff in schools and programs that are deeply committed to reaching every learner,” Nelson said. “My role at MySchool@Kent has provided a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a program that differs from my previous experiences across 32 years in education.”

Nelson brings extensive experience as an educator and administrator. He most recently served as director of pre-K–12 instructional leadership for Grand Rapids Public Schools’ northwest quadrant before retiring in 2024.

In 2025, he also spent five months as interim elementary principal for Sparta Area Public Schools.

He said he looks forward to supporting the MySchool@Kent community and sharing the program’s unique benefits with schools through KentISD.

In a memo to the Kent ISD School Board, Assistant Superintendent of Career and Talent Development Sue Gardner said Nelson quickly adapted to the role and built strong connections within the program.

“Nelson has formed strong relationships with staff and quickly immersed himself in the uniqueness of the school and program,” Gardner wrote.
