Kent ISD cuts 10 positions due to loss of grants, dip in online school enrollment

Kent ISD —  The Kent ISD School Board voted May 16 to eliminate 10 positions due to the loss of grant funding and declining enrollment at its online school.

The elimination of several grants in Michigan’s 2026-27 state budget led to three positions being cut: an English learner coach, an adult education community outreach coordinator and a data and research support specialist.

The board also voted to eliminate seven MySchool@Kent positions: a registrar; a counselor; an English teacher; a teacher consultant and three coach/invention positions. Just before the pandemic, the online school enrolled about 800 students. During the meeting, Superintendent Ron Gorman said enrollment has declined significantly because school districts are now using their own resources to support students with online learning.

At the same meeting, the board approved seven new positions in special education programs. Those positions are: supervisor for deaf and hard of hearing and visually impaired programs; instructional support specialist; registered nurse: social worker; ASL interpreter coordinator and two transition coaches.
