Students invited to join the ‘American Adventure’

Education Everywhere — At America’s bicentennial in 1976, President Gerald R. Ford proclaimed that the “American Adventure” is a continuing journey. This summer, students are invited to take up the adventure and become active Grand Rapids, U.S. and global citizens.

The one-day Civics Camp will be held May 30 at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in downtown Grand Rapids. All middle-school and high-school students are invited free of charge, but space is limited. Register on the DeVos Learning Center website.

Students who attend will learn about:

  • Being a U.S. citizen: The foundations of American government, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the three branches of the U.S. government.
  • Being a global citizen: Values, traditions and concerns of people from around the world and how their responsibilities extend beyond U.S. borders.
  • Being a Grand Rapids citizen: Learn how local governments solve problems and make lives better locally.

The camp will also feature guest speakers, including State Sen. Mark Huizenga, who will bring real-world examples to inspire students. Students who participate will receive a commemorative patch in honor of Grand Rapids America 250.

The camp is organized by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, Scouting America’s Michigan Crossroads Council and Grand Rapids America 250, the local committee organized to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and Grand Rapids’ 175th anniversary in 2026.
